The aging process

with one comment

Chronologically we’re all aging. When people talk about how young or old a person is, however, they’re not usually referring to their chronological age.

The aging process in a social context can mean something very different. It’s only this week I’ve tried to understand what that means though. When people say that someone ‘acts’ young or old, or is ‘set in their ways’, or ‘young at heart’ for example.

I think the truth is that people don’t ‘get old’.

The world moves on, the world changes, advances and progresses. It’s always moving. It’s relentless and unstoppable.

‘Getting old’ means to stop keeping up, that’s all. You don’t change, the rest of the world does, as it always does.

It’s perfectly OK to grow old or to stay young. In fact if you don’t keep up, keep learning, you ‘get old’ by default. I think most people would be happier if they were conscious of the choice though.
